Chirac Backs Law to Keep Signs of Faith Out of School

December 18th, 2003

To the Editor,

As usual, the French vision of its “republic” is based upon false visual impressions of uniformity instead of the enforcement of non-discrimination laws and the teaching of tolerance. One cannot compare the wearing of a cross, a purely voluntary display, with the observance of mandated religious principles by Muslims and Jews expressed in the covering of one’s head.

Will France require school children to adopt new names so that fellow students won’t be driven to violence by the sounds of children enunciating, “Abou-Donia” or “Greenberg”? How can the next generation of persons, accepting/rejecting job applications, learn to respect diversity if it is prohibited in the schools?

Anything to avoid enforcement of the laws upon which a “true republic stands”. Vichy lives on in spirit.
